For many years, emergency lighting and regular lighting have existed in two different worlds. One smart, controllable, and integrated. The other reliable and safe, but often more standalone and manually controlled. But buildings and facilities are changing. The demand for energy-efficient operation, digital oversight, and intelligent control is growing rapidly, and today the entire building is expected to function as a cohesive system. With DALI-based emergency lighting, the boundary between general lighting and safety lighting is disappearing.
DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface), the well-known communication protocol that enables digital monitoring and control of lighting installations, has developed rapidly since 1999. This development also includes emergency lighting luminaires with DALI functionality. These new possibilities mean that emergency lighting no longer needs to be a separate background system. Instead, it becomes an active part of the building’s overall lighting control, where each luminaire has its own address and can communicate directly with the system.

Previously, emergency lighting was mainly about working when something went wrong. With DALI, and with modern system solutions in general, the focus shifts to continuous monitoring. The luminaires report their status continuously, and the system provides facility managers with direct information about battery status, functional tests, and any faults. This saves time, simplifies documentation, and reduces the risk that issues are only discovered during inspections. The safety remains—but the way of working becomes smarter.
Today’s buildings are increasingly designed with integrated control systems where ventilation, energy, and lighting work together. When emergency lighting is connected to the same structure, new opportunities open up for both energy efficiency and simplified facility management.
