When did you last test your smoke alarm?

Statistics show that more than approximately 20,000 residential fires occur in Sweden every year. 85 percent of those who are injured or killed in fires are affected in their own homes. On 1 December each year, we—together with the Swedish Fire Protection Association and MSB—highlight “Smoke Alarm Day”—an important day when everyone is encouraged to test their smoke alarms to ensure they actually work.

The goal of Smoke Alarm Day is to spread awareness about the cheapest life insurance you can get: the smoke alarm. Alarmingly, one in ten homes in Sweden still lacks a smoke alarm entirely. The Swedish Fire Protection Association therefore urges everyone to review their home fire safety and ensure that existing smoke alarms are functioning properly. This simple yet brilliant safety device can, in an emergency, give you the extra time you need to warn others, attempt to extinguish a fire, or even save lives.

Do you know the most common causes of fires in the home?

  • The stove: Forgetting food on the burner or accidentally turning it on.

  • Fireplaces: Chimney fires caused by improper burning.

  • Smoking: Still one of the leading causes of fatal fires, especially smoking in bed.

  • Candles: Fires caused by candle holders or improper placement.

  • Electrical devices: Battery charging, washing machines, tumble dryers, and freezers.

A smart way to avoid forgetting to test your fire protection is MSB’s service “SMS Reminder.” By registering your mobile number, you will receive an SMS at a time of your choice reminding you to press the button and test your smoke alarms—smart, fast, and easy. Sign up (Link>) and make sure your fire protection is working!
